A cat sitting in the fairlead of the barque PAMIR, 1947
cat
Image by Australian National Maritime Museum on The Commons
Between 1900 and the 1950s, Sydney photographer Sam Hood took hundreds of photographs of ships and their crew for souvenirs of their visit or to send home to families. This photograph depicts a ship’s cat on the PAMIR, one of the largest commercial sailing ships on world routes. Cargoes of grain provided happy hunting grounds.

The four-masted German barque was the flagship for Sydney’s Australia Day regatta, which was held on the public holiday on 27 January 1947. The vessel, along with a naval gunboat, was moored at Kurraba Point and acted as the starting and finishing line for some 2,000 participants of the 111th Anniversary Regatta.

For more information see Patricia Miles’ article Little Shipmates in Signals 82, 2008, pp 34-35.

This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Samuel J. Hood Studio collection. Sam Hood (1872-1953) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 60-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars. The photos in the collection were taken mainly in Sydney and Newcastle during the first half of the 20th century.

The ANMM undertakes research and accepts public comments that enhance the information we hold about images in our collection. This record has been updated accordingly.
